Houseplant of the Month: Chives

I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical about naming chives as my houseplant of the month—mainly because they’ve spent more time outdoors than in. But after seeing how tough, beautiful, and surprisingly versatile they are, I had to give them their well-deserved spotlight.
I may be late to the party, but I just recently learned that chives actually bloom—and those soft, delicate purple flowers are not only beautiful, they’re also edible! I’ve been growing my chives since last summer, and they’ve truly been through it all: blazing heat, freezing sleet, snowy days, torrential rain—you name it, and they’ve survived it with style.
Beyond their resilience, chives are a gardener’s friend. They help deter certain pests, are super easy to grow, and they double as a flavorful addition to just about everything—salads, dips, soups, baked potatoes, you name it. On top of that, they’re rich in vitamins A and C, and are said to boost the immune system and aid in digestion.
All in all, these hardy little herbs have more than earned their place in the spotlight this month.
